The 5-day Mount Kenya lake expedition offers a breathtaking alternative to summit-focused climbs, taking you deep into the alpine zone to discover two of the mountain’s most spectacular crater lakes: Lake Ellis and Lake Michaelson. Unlike traditional Mount Kenya trekking itineraries that push for Point Lenana, this journey prioritizes scenery, wildlife, and comfort, making it ideal for moderate hikers, birdwatchers, and photographers. Over five days, you will trek through changing vegetation zones—from dense montane forest and giant bamboo to open heathland dotted with giant groundsels—before reaching the pristine shores of these two high-altitude gems. This scenic Mount Kenya trek keeps altitudes between 3,000m and 4,200m, significantly reducing the risk of altitude sickness while maximizing time spent in the mountain’s most photogenic landscapes.

Your alpine lake hiking Kenya adventure begins with a morning transfer from Nairobi to the Sirimon Gate on the dry northwestern flank of Mount Kenya. From there, you will hike gently through Podocarpus forest to Old Moses Camp, where you spend the first night acclimatizing. Day two is a highlight: a steady climb up the Likii North Valley rewards you with your first views of Lake Ellis, a shallow but strikingly reflective alpine lake set against the jagged peaks of Batian and Nelion. After soaking in the views and enjoying a picnic lunch by the water, you continue your trek across the moorland toward Mackinder’s Valley. This section of the Mount Kenya hiking tour feels remote and wild, with few other trekkers and excellent chances of spotting Sykes monkeys, hyrax, and soaring lammergeier vultures.

On day three, you descend gently from the moorland into the upper Gorges Valley, where Lake Michaelson awaits. Unlike the open setting of Lake Ellis, Lake Michaelson is dramatically cradled by sheer cliffs and fed by a cascading waterfall—one of the most photographed sights on any Mount Kenya trekking itinerary. The turquoise waters, surrounded by giant lobelias and senecios, create a scene of almost otherworldly beauty. You will have ample time to explore the lake’s edge, take photographs, and simply absorb the silence of this high-altitude sanctuary. Overnight camping near the lake allows you to experience the unforgettable sight of stars reflecting off the still water, far from any light pollution.

Day four offers flexibility: you may choose to rest at Lake Michaelson, hike to a nearby viewpoint for sunrise over the lake and waterfall, or take a gentle exploratory walk along the valley floor. This built-in acclimatization day ensures you remain energized and healthy while deepening your connection to the mountain’s unique alpine ecosystem. Your high-altitude lake safari on foot continues to reveal the hardy wildlife and plant life adapted to this extreme environment, including mountain hyrax, klipspringer antelope, and the bizarre, prehistoric-looking giant groundsels. On the final day, you descend through heathland and bamboo back to the Sirimon Gate, where your vehicle waits to return you to Nairobi.

Throughout this 5-day Mount Kenya lake expedition, you are supported by an experienced mountain guide, a cook, and porters, ensuring you carry only a daypack. Accommodation alternates between mountain bandas and spacious tents with sleeping mats, and all meals are freshly prepared. The best seasons for this scenic Mount Kenya trek are January through March and June through October, when trails are dry and views are clear. Whether you are a first-time high-altitude hiker or a seasoned trekker looking for a less crowded route, the Lake Ellis and Lake Michaelson trek delivers unforgettable alpine scenery without the strain of a summit push. Book your Mount Kenya hiking tour today and discover why these two crater lakes are considered the mountain’s hidden jewels.
