Mount Kenya Sirimon to Chogoria trek is widely considered the most scenic and rewarding trekking route on Mount Kenya. This iconic cross-mountain hike combines two of the best routes; Sirimon and Chogoria offering an unmatched diversity of landscapes, ecosystems and panoramic views in one unforgettable adventure.

Mount Kenya Sirimon to Chogoria trek begins on the Sirimon Route, located on the drier northwestern side of the mountain. Known for its gradual ascent and excellent acclimatization profile, this route provides a safer and more comfortable climb. Trekkers pass through dense montane forest, bamboo zones and expansive alpine moorlands filled with unique flora such as giant lobelias and groundsels. The steady “walk high, sleep low” approach significantly increases summit success rates.

After reaching Point Lenana (4,985m), the descent follows the breathtaking Chogoria Route, widely regarded as the most beautiful trail on Mount Kenya. This section unveils dramatic scenery, including the towering cliffs of The Temple, the crystal-clear waters of Lake Michaelson, and the unique rock formations of the Giant’s Billiards Table. The trail continues through lush bamboo and rainforest, offering opportunities to spot wildlife such as colobus monkeys before exiting at Chogoria town.

The Mount Kenya Sirimon to Chogoria trek is ideal for trekkers seeking a non-technical Mount Kenya climb with maximum scenic variety and minimal backtracking. Overnight stays at Old Moses Camp (3,300m) and Shipton’s Camp (4,200m) allow for proper altitude acclimatization before the early morning summit push. Reaching Point Lenana at sunrise offers breathtaking views that, on clear days, may extend as far as Mount Kilimanjaro.

The best time to hike Mount Kenya via the Sirimon Chogoria route is during the dry seasons: January to March and June to October. These months provide clear skies, better trail conditions, and optimal trekking experiences. While the Sirimon side remains relatively dry, the Chogoria route is greener and wetter, so proper gear is essential. Temperatures at higher altitudes can drop below freezing, especially at Shipton’s Camp, making warm clothing a must.
